Treat hypoglycemia? |
I have been having fairly significant episodes of hypoglycemia on a regular basis for the last few weeks. I have now been referred to an endocrinologist by my pcp but can't be seen for two weeks. I am really having difficulty at work. The episodes occur anywhere from about a half hour to a few hours after a meal depending on what I eat. I get pretty forgetful, have trouble completing basic tasks at work (I'm a manager in retail) and feel like I might pass out when I have to perform even moderate physical activity (so far I haven't, though). This happens several times a day. My doctor told me to avoid sugary foods and eat every few hours, but I am still having problems. I don't know what to eat to avoid these episodes and I really don't know what to do once symptoms begin. Any advice? keep small pieces of candy in your pocket so you can eat them right away when you start to feel 'low sugar' You shouldn't do this alot, but it will get you by every now and then Go to a pharmacy and get some tubes of instant glucose. They are behind the pharmacy counter but don't require a prescription. One tube will raise your blood sugar within minutes. You should be feeling better within 10 minutes or so. |
