If you Hypoglycemia, does that follow up with DIABETES?

plz help... idk if hypoglycemia can be an affect of diabetes, so if u have hypo, then will u eventually have diabetes?

Not all the time. I have had it all my life and am 31 years old. My dad is 59 and has had it all his life. None of us have diabetes.

While patients who do not have any metabolic problems can complain of symptoms suggestive of low blood sugar, true hypoglycemia usually occurs in patients being treated for diabetes (type 1 and type 2). Patients with pre-diabetes who have insulin resistance can also have low sugars on occasion if their high circulating insulin levels are further challenged by a prolonged period of fasting. There are other rare causes for hypoglycemia, such as insulin producing tumors (insulinomas) and certain medications.


The quickest way to raise your blood glucose and treat hypoglycemia is with some form of sugar, such as 3 glucose tablets (you can buy these at the drug store), 1/2 cup of fruit juice, or 5-6 pieces of hard candy.

Ask your health care professional or dietitian to list foods that you can use to treat low blood glucose. And then, be sure you always have at least one type of sugar with you.

Once you've checked your blood glucose and treated your hypoglycemia, wait 15 or 20 minutes and check your blood again. If your blood glucose is still low and your symptoms of hypoglycemia don't go away, repeat the treatment. After you feel better, be sure to eat your regular meals and snacks as planned to keep your blood glucose level up.

It's important to treat hypoglycemia quickly because hypoglycemia can get worse and you could pass out. If you pass out, you will need IMMEDIATE treatment, such as an injection of glucagon or emergency treatment in a hospital.

Hypo means low, hyper means high, so to be hypoglycemic means that your blood sugar would be notoriously low. With a diabetic their blood sugars normally run high. Two different spectrums. The only real relation is that both conditions involve the pancreas which is responsible for excreating insulin into the blood stream to regulate blood sugars. One condition the pancreas pumps out too much, the other the pancreas pumps out too little. Hope that helps.

SOME. hypoglycemics end up becoming insulin resistant. After insulin resistance starts,diabetes usually follows. Hi from another hypoglycemic,by the way.

The reason hypoglycemics end up as such is because of the constant overdose of insulin they have going on within them. ...And it sucks. =(

No - don't worry. You are right that people with diabetes often have hypoglycemia because we take too much insulin or don't eat enough, exercise too much etc. but this is not why you have hypoglycemia and it doesn't mean that you are going to get diabetes - infact, it is the opporsite of diabetes. Someone with type 1 diabetes doesn't produce any insulin, you may produce too much! I'm sure you're dr will have started you on treatment and I hope that's helping - in my oppinion hypos are by far the worst thing about diabetes so I have a lot of sympathy for you - I don't know much about hypoglycemic disorders but hope it can be controled well for you.
