Surgery for Hyperthyroidism?

I found out I had Hyperthyroidism at the end of 6th grade (I'm going into tenth grade) and have been on the medication (methimazole) for over two years then I got the radioactive iodine in September. It was pointless, so I'm getting it again on monday and I was wondering if it doesn't work, if i should just talk to my doctor about getting the surgery.
I think my mom doesn't like the idea but my aunt had hyperthyroidism till she got the surgery and now i'm starting to feel like thats the only way.

You really need to have the good pow wow sit down with your mom and doctor. Before thinking surgery, work with your doctor on all other options for treatment.

I work in the medical field behind the scenes...and I have actually seen cases where the radioactive iodine treatment did work the second time.

Best of luck to you!!

This is really something you need to discuss w/ your mom & doctor. Usually surgery is the best way in dealing w/ it. I have a few friends who needed the surgery but they were not as young as you. This may be your mom's concern because surgeries are always a risk. Good luck!

my mom did it and it changed her so much. Please get it done if you feel you need to , My mom had the bulging eye and neck thing going on, She also had crazy mood swings, I would do it if i had to

Everyone is different. Get the test done and go from there. I'm sure your Dr. knows what is best for treatment.

The surgery can have lots of complications. I wouldn't suggest it unless the medication either is not working, or the side effects are too great.
