Hyperthyroidism, depression, and addiction - any link??

I was recently diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and referred to an endocrinologist, and was put on Inderal for my symptoms, which are pretty bad and getting worse everyday. In the past 6 months or so, I have also gotten more and more depressed, and it is having a serious impact on my life and relationships. I haven't been able to sleep, but have no energy either. My heart is racing and I feel like I'm losing my mind. Here's the best part - I am also an addict, and drugs have no effect on me anymore, but I continue to do them even though I know they have to be making my condition worse. My question is this: are depression and hyperthyroidism linked in any way to addiction, and what issue should I tackle first? Also, which of the 3 is causing my symptoms? I can't get in to my doctor for 3 weeks and am considering just going to the ER. Thanks!!

They are all probably interconnected. Your drug addiction could have caused your thyroid problems, or your thyroid problem could have subconsciously increased your desire for a "chemical solution" thus an addiction.

You really need to stop the drugs. If you can't do it on your own, find a Addicts Anonymous support group for help or enlist your non-drug-related friends/family. (or find a way to afford rehab)

Thyroid problems cause a lot of problems and could be also causing your depression. But then so could your addiction. Quitting your addiction and taking your thyroid medication religiously should help balance your moods.

Depression btw is usually a symptom of a cause, not usually a cause itself.

Your lack of sleep is probably the hyperthyroidism, as that is a normal symptom.

You are also going to want to eat healthier and make sure you get a lot of calcium as hyperthyroidism can deplete your calcium stores causing brittle bones.

Good Luck!

Depression and addiction are definitely linked. You should seek help immediately for addiction. It will make any other condition you have much worse.
