Question about hyPERthyroidism?

How common or advisable is it for doctors to give thyroid hormone replacement to a patient who is HYPER as a method of suppression?
What is a good approach to control the levels of a hyper patient?

And what about if the hyperthyroidism is causing hyperadrenalism (cushings like symptoms)- what can be given or taken to help that (cortisol etc)

Thanks!

One of the most effective and widely accepted therapies to treat hyperthyroidism is something called 鈥楻adioactive iodine鈥?treatment. This is considered as permanent cure for hyperthyroidism. It works on one particular theory that thyroid cells are the only cells in the body that have capability to absorb iodine. By getting radioactive form of the iodine gets these cells a poisonous environment and hence, these cells die when they try to consume radioactive iodine. The main benefit for this therapy is since the iodine cannot be even glanced by any other cells except thyroid cells, there are very less chances to affect other cells that can otherwise be harmed with radioactive rays. In addition, radioactive medicines can be taken by mouth and there is no need to get hospitalized. The treatment may last long for month or so.

Another treatment includes surgical removal of the thyroid gland or nodule. This is a surefire for treating hyperthyroidism but it is not frequently used. This is because in majority of the cases, hyperthyroidism is the result of Grave鈥檚 Disease and for that radioactive iodine works wonderfully. However, surgery becomes mandatory in many cases such as intolerance to radioactive medicine, huge nodule etc.

hi,i have hyperthyroidism, my doctor asked me to take 12 pills of "basden"(the name of the drug) and a 1/2 pill of "avlocardil" for my heart beating at the first beginning, then after 2 months i took just 9 pills, then the hyperthyroidism became hypothyroidism so i stopped the pills.
i do blood analysis every week and i think it's OK to take the hormone replacement, coz here am OK now.

I had hashimotos, which is hyper sometimes and hypo others, depending on if my thyroid was swelling or not...I eventually had my thyroid removed and am on synthroid. I do not think you would give that to someone who already is making too much thyroid...it would be like adding fuel to a fire, so I don't see how that would work. there is the site thryoid@yahoogroups.com that may have more hyper people on it. About.com/thyroid also. and if you need referals to good endocronologist who work with thyroid issues I would go to www.thyca.org. it is for thyroid cancer, but we need to work with endos who know about thyroids more than just about anyone, so that list is a good place to start. good luck.
