Hyperthyroidism symptoms?

Do you experience all of the symptoms all of the time with hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) Or is it possible in the early stages to have only some of the symptoms on and off?

Its usual to not have all the symptoms listed but a combination of them. In my experience the symptoms are not intermittent - they were always there although sometimes i was more aware of them.

The ones which bothered me most were overheating, sweating and tremor through my body - hands and legs in particular. Made it very difficult to hold anything steady. I also lost around 3 stone in weight - even though i was having to get up during the night for cereal or toast as i woke up starving!

Other common symptoms are: irritability, palpitations, breathlessness, muscle weakness, softer more frequent bowel movements, very light or absent periods(in females), itchy body, nails brittle, hair thinner, watery eyes, double vision and blurriness and of course goitre in some people.

All this is successfully controlled with carbimazole tablets. I then had radioactive iodine treatment - i wouldnt really recommend this to others as my levels fell so low after that i felt awful for months, and i dont think my metabolism or heat tolerance has ever recovered - i'm now heavier than i've ever been and always cold but on a massive dose of thyroxine.

Good luck

You may feel nervous, moody, weak, or tired.
Have hand tremors; have a fast or irregular heartbeat; or have trouble breathing, even when you are resting.
Sweat a lot, and have warm, red skin that may be itchy.
Have frequent and sometimes loose bowel movements.
Have fine, soft hair that is falling out.
Lose weight even though you are eating normally or more than usual.
In addition, some women have irregular menstrual cycles or stop having periods altogether, and some men may develop enlarged breasts.

The symptoms of hyperthyroidism are not the same for everyone. Your symptoms will depend on how much hormone your thyroid gland is making, how long you have had the condition, and your age.
