Anyone with hyperthyroidism?

My grandma has some form of thyroid disease, she can't remember if it's hyper or hypo... I've been feeling horrible for pretty much a year. I was given a blood test in March with "no thyroid problems" , said my doctor.. I have been looking up symptoms every few months online, and they all seem to indicate thyroid disease, one way or the other. Today, I discover I'm starting my period AGAIN! I just had my last one from 11/29-12/03. And I wasn't keeping track then, but I swore I had just had a period about 2.5 weeks prior to that one... Just another symptom to cross off the list. I'm starting to feel like a hypochondriac... I know I'm not faking these symptoms, but am I just looking to classify them?? Any one with hyperthyroidism, could you please tell me how you discovered you had it???

Frequent periods IS a symtom/sign. Quite simply, google "frequent periods" and hyperthyroidism comes up most common.

I have hyperthyroidism due to Graves Disease and it's my understanding that hyper patients actually have infrequent and light periods. I'm not a doctor =) but I think you may be hypothyroid.

The following is from thyroid.about.com:

If you're hyperthyroid, you may find:
Your periods are stopped, or very light, or infrequent

The symptoms of hypothyroidism depend on how hypothyroid you are, your age, your general level of health, and how hypothyroidism affects you uniquely. You may have some or all of the following symptoms, in varying severity:
You have a heavier than normal menstrual period, or your period is longer than it used to be, or comes more frequently

My hyperthyroidism was diagnosed due to thyroid panel blood tests and the Graves was confirmed by an Uptake & Scan Thyroid Test. I just got the hospital bill for this so before you take any special tests, make sure your insurance will cover it beforehand. I paid a copay and thought that would cover the costs but just received a bill stating my insurance has paid $400 and I owe $1,100!!! I had no idea how much it cost beforehand and thought my copay covered it. I am going to fight it. My copays have covered everything else so far. I'm hoping it's just a billing error.

If you have thryoid disease and already have many symptoms, you definitely need to treat it before it progresses further. My GP was not very helpful as most know little about thyroid. You need a specialist called an Endocrinologist. I'm suffering from anxiety since mine was not diagnosed for at least 5 years (as I said, my GP had no idea what it was.) Good luck!

I have hypothyroidism and it does it run in families (both kinds of thyroid disorders run in families). Having closer or heavy periods can indicate hypothyroidism. So keep getting your blood tested. March was almost a year ago, so check it again, and see a different doctor if that one seemed unresponsive. I thought I might have hypo because many women in my family had it, and also I was getting puffy around the eyes. But don't worry too much, you can still go on to do everything you want in life, even if you do have a thyroid condition! It's treatable.

I dont have hyperthyroidism, but a simple blood test can verify whether you're hyper or hypo. I'm sure that you already read up on the symptoms of Hyperthyroidism. Frequent periods is not a sign of hyperthyroidism. You might want to check with your doctor further on this is the symptoms persist. You can find out whether you grandmother is hyper or hypo by going through her meds. If she's hypo she will be taking Synthroid otherwise known as Levothyroxine. If you want to know more you can read http://www.endocrineweb.com/hyper1.html but also pay a visit to your doctor before interpreting your symptoms.

Yes, i've had it and yes, frequent and heavy periods are one of the many symptoms. Hyperthyroidism can be hereditary, too.
I discovered it because i developed a form of it called Grave's disease. I started to feel my eyes dry and had blurry vision.
Nervousness, restlessness.
Trembling hands.
Rapid heartbeat.
Feelings of excessive warmth and intolerance of heat.
Hot, sweaty skin.
Weight loss despite increased appetite.
And muscle and joint pains were some of my symptoms.
A thyroid blood panel test that includes TSH, fT4, fT3, rT4, rT3, anti TG, anti TPO should be performed to see what kind of disfunction your tyroid has.

There can be other hormonal causes for your excessive bleeding, so you better go to an endocrinologist instead of a general practitioner.

Many women with polycystic ovary disease have irregular periods and may have very little menstruation (oligomenorrhea) or no period at all (amenorrhea).
