Could I have hyperthyroidism?

Before puberty I was the most hyperactive child you'd ever seen. I use to even eat pure sugar for the high. Ever since I was about in middle school (6-7 years ago) I've had trouble concentrating in school no matter how hard I'd tried.

I've always felt sluggish ever since even though I regularly exercise now. I usually talk very slowly and it takes an unusual amount of effort to speak with the same amount of energy as most people around me. I've always been underweight as well (I weight about 145lbs at 6"1') almost no matter how much I eat.

I can barely remember any days I've made it through without sleeping one or two times through the day (sometimes on weekends I'll get a full nights rest and still sleep about 4 hrs throughout the day for some reason).

I'm getting my thyroid checked on Monday. Think this might be hyperthyroidism? I just heard of it not long ago. I'm hoping this isn't all in my head because I've never felt at a normal energy rate for several years now.

Nope. Very little of what you describe is thyroid related symptoms. Nothing that you describe is a hyperthyroid symptom. Especially the sleeping. Believe me, if you were hyperthyroid, you wouldn't be sleeping at night, let alone during the day.

But only blood tests can tell you for sure, and only free T3 and free T4 tests. A TSH test is an indirect second hand way to guess at what your T3 and T4 levels are.

It could very well be. Endocrine (thyroid) diseases are the most sneaky - their symptoms do not cause pain, so people don't get them checked out and stay undiagnosed.

So go to the doctor, and drink heaps of water (that's my solution for everything :P)

I want to wish you all the best with your health Please see a M.D. for a proper diagnosis. .hyperthyroidism is caused by excessive production of thyroid hormones. Characteristics include fatigue, nervousness, heat tolerance, sweating, wt. loss, muscle weakness, goiter, and etc. I would have a complete physical to diagnosis your condition correctly. It can be due to other causes as well.
