Has anybody had radioactive iodine for hyperthyroidism. What are the side effects?

I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism cause by autoimmune disease.(It's not Graves disease.) I had taken PTU briefly in 2003. It left but returned in 2005.I can't take propanolol (beta blockers) for heart rate.Verapamil causes my blood pressure to drop. I had to be taken off PTU briefly for liver problems. Does radioactive iodine have side effects, such as having hypothyroid afterwards, and have to take medicine for that? Does it affect future fertility? How long before you feel like your normal self? I've gotten mixed answers from doctors.

Hi, well I can't say for people but I did research this alot for my cat, he had hyperthyroidism and did die of it because he was misdiagnosed for 5 years prior and was too weak to do much with later on. You will have radioactivity after it so you have to avoid people and things for abit, it shouldn't affect your reproductability but don't try to get pregnant until the radioactivity is out of your system, the doctors can tell you more about that, for a cat it was 2-3 weeks not sure on a person. The radioactive iodine will destroy your thyroid, you will have to be on meds for life to keep it regulated, usually Armour thyroid or Lexa? not sure of the spelling on that one, but you will take 100% dose. Your heart rate may decrease and blood pressure regulate after treatment because your system is moving too fast now because of the thyroid so you should feel alot better after treatment. You may gain weight so you will have to watch your diet, as your system will slow down.

I also have hyperthyroidism and I have been taking methamizole for over 10 years. One of the effects is that you will have to take thyroid for the rest of your life. I have been told you will feel sluggish for a while until they have your levels up to the correct dosage. Not a real help but there you go.

i had the atomic cocktail I iodine131 back in 79 because of graves disease. i was advised to avoid pregnant women(i think) or family for a couple of days to let iodine clear out.
yes you have hypothyroidism after since your thyroid destroyed.
and yes you need to take thyroid pill for rest of life, but no big deal.
i don't know about fertility

The number one major side effect is hypothyroidism. It is irreversible, and you will have to be treated for it and on medication for the rest of your life. Don't do it!
