Is it possible that a thin person could be diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism?

OK, so I'm not the most elidgible to have Hyperthyroidism. I'm only a teenager but I think I have it because of the chills. I'm getting a blood test done and as I'm scared that I have it, I'm also a little scared of not having it becacuse my mom doesn't believe me and I had to make a big deal about it so she would get me an apointment. She says the pediatrition will laugh at me and tell me teens don't get Hypothroidism and not even give me the test :( I think that the chills are a bit odd (twitching/jerking/shaking of my right shoulder, or arm/hand, face, and head shaking) but she says everybody gets chills, I just think I get a lot of them. The problem with my theory is that the main idea of Hypothyroidism is that it slows your metablism (as the thyroid's perpose is to release hormones that regulate the metabilism) and I'm not fat. I'm actualy below my recomended weight and the average for my age and height. Does this mean I have no chance of being diagnosed with Hypothoroidism?

I meant to say HYPOTHROIDISM rather than hyperthyroidism, uggg, so confusing!

Ok, I'm a little confused by your question, do you think you have hyperthyroidism or hypothyriodism? You said hypothyriodism more times so I'm gonna just assume you only mis-typed your question title. I get the two confused all the time but hyperthyroidism means your thyroid makes too much thyroid hormone and hypothyroid means it makes not enough.

The answer to your question is yes, a young thin person can have hypothyroidism. I should know, I was recently diagnosed and I am also young and thin.

The pediatrition won't laugh at you, he or she will talk to you about your symptoms and if they think you might have a thyroid problem then they'll do a blood test. If you do have it, they'll probably put you on medication.

As I understand it, hypothyroidism isn't that big of a deal, it's easily treatable with medication and the medication doesn't have any side effects or anything like that.

If your mom refuses to believe you and won't make you an appointment to test for hypothyroidism, tell her you want to see a doctor to figure out what's causing the chills and twitching.

Hope that helps!

you have said the two opposites, you are more likely to have hyper thyroid, as in cant gain weight, instead of hypo which means its under active and you gain a lot of weight, but it could have many other causes, so make sure they check your blood sugar as well, good luck

Hey your lead says hyper, not hypo. Hyperthyroidism is when your thyroid is over producing and that can lead to weight loss. If you feel something is up, no shame in having the doc check it out. Just because you're a teenager, doesn't mean that your body can't have a systemic disorder, lots of teens do. Good luck!

It's less usual for a teenage to have a thyroid disease than a woman in her 30s or 40s. But that's no reason you can't have it.

You are describing two different thyroid diseases (hypo and hyper) and giving symptoms for both, so I seriously doubt you have a thyroid problem. This is not based on your age or weight, but on the fact that they symptoms you give conflict. But you still should get this checked out. Have the thyroid tests, and any other tests your doctor needs to figure out what really is wrong with you.

And your mother should get you medical care when you don't feel well, and and not belittle you about. It is her responsibility!

Might be a good idea to get more education on this matter. There is HYPOthyroidism and HYPERthyroidism. Lots of difference. Ask the Dr.

You are talking about two distinctly different disorders. Hyperthyroidism is when the thyroid is over active - causing symtoms - including inability to sustain weight.

Hypothyroidism is underactive thyroid with a number of symptoms, including overweight, dry skin among others.
