Diet for Hypertension and High tryglicerid - Need Help?

I have hypertension and very high tryglicerid levels (718, normal should be less than 150). I am 29 yr old guy, smoker, 168 pounds.

Can someone tell me the best diet to reduce the tryglicerid levels and also to get the BP in normal range?

Here are some suggestions for lifestyle and diet:

1. Stop smoking. I'm sure you heard this many times already. So quit already.

2. Eat a diet that consists mainly of fresh vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat meat. You're going to have to learn to cook--just keep your cooking simple and it won't be too much trouble.

3. De-emphasize animal fats, such as butter, dairy fat, and fatty meats. Use vegetable oil (olive for instance) for as much of your cooking as possible. The fatty acids found in fatty fish (tuna, salmon, mackerel, sardines) and nuts improve heart function.

4. You can take flax and/or fish oil for heart protection also. Typical amounts are 2 Tbsp flax or 2 tsp fish oil per day, with a meal. Take a daily multi-vitamin and mineral also.

5. Eliminate high-salt foods from your diet. Use little salt in your cooking--use lemon and herb seasonings instead.

6. Simple exercise can help lower your blood pressure, such a bike riding or walking. 30 mins/day 5x/week should do it.

Obviously you need to quit smoking. Exercise can help too. If it doesn't you need meds.

Avoid adding extra salt.
Avoid fatty foods, and especially avoid high carbohydrates. Read all labels.
Your doctor should have given you a diet. If not, go back and request one. How can you treat yourself if you are not given information? Bless your heart.

Cutting your sodium intake would be the first step in the right direction. I know it's hard but I too had this problem.
Good Luck!

With a triglyceride level of 718 you should be looking for a doctor's help in reducing it to normal levels. Your salt level though is probably due to excess sodium intake. Nutritionists say that we should consume a maximum of 2300 mg /day. You might want to consult www.lowsodiumcooking.com
