How to read Eyeglass prescription?

I have got this Spectacle prescription for my 5 years鈥?old:
(From Optometrists)

Right: Sphere + 0.25 ; Cylinder -3.50 ; Axis 15
Left: Sphere + 0.25 ; Cylinder -3.50 ; Axis 175

From Ophthalmologist:

Right: Sphere -3.5 ; Cylinder +4.5 ; Axis 100
Left: Sphere -2.0 ; Cylinder +3.0 ; Axis 90

Could you please tell me how bad the eyes are? I would like to know in simple words what do we say what is the eyeglass number? I understand that it shows astigmatism but not sure whether this is myopia or hyperopia? Far or nearsightedness? When to wear the glasses sometimes or most of the time? Any suggestions on these please.

Thank you

How can this astigmatism be corrected, any other option then eyeglasses? when the child grows the astigamtism goes better or worse? thanks

ok this is pretty detailed.. first you should be able to discuss any questions with the optom and the ophthal who gave the scripts.
second, as ur child is so young they need to be re examined regularly (every few mths) so you need to find someone you trust with your childs eye health.

third, the scripts are basically the same except the one from the ophthal is written in an older style ( with a + cylinder for astigmatism) I transposed it so you can compare the two together.
now it looks closer to the one from optom. (the spheres are similar and are both +, and the cyls both - and axis very close rather than opposite)

ophthal script transposed is:
R s+1.00 c -4.50 axis 10
L s+1.00 c-3.00 axis 180
in my experience ophthal scripts are usually too hard for the patient to handle and they end up changing the lenses. the optom usually gives a script that is easier for the patient to wear, especially kids.
looking at the script your child is slightly longsighted and has a significant astigmatism and that is the reason the glasses should be worn all the time once used to them.
starting with the lower script and working up might be a good strategy to discuss with the ophthal if they are open to the idea.
Good Luck

I think the eyes are slightly shortsighted.

I'M NOT SURE though. Please do check with someone who knows. =)

excellent post by "mybaby".

those are fairly close Rx's. the ophth Rx'd more cyl in the R eye, the optom has more cyl in the left eye.

that patient is neither nearsighted nor farsighted...they are "mixed astigmatism". pretty much astigmatism only.

this gets complicated and detailed to describe, but glasses Rx's can be written in multiple ways. those Rx's are similar, even if they dont appear to be similar when looking at them written on paper.

i'd go with the optometrist's rx. but i'm admittedly biased...

i dont have a lot of respect for most ophthalmologists' ability to come up with a good Rx for anybody.
