Explanation of Hyperlipidemia?

Hyperlipidemia
An elevation of lipids (fats) in the bloodstream. These lipids include cholesterol, cholesterol esters (compounds), phospholipids and triglycerides. They're transported in the blood as part of large molecules called lipoproteins.

Pretty much a medical term for high blood cholesterol...

HIGH CHOLESTEROL - (HYPERLIPIDEMIA)

There are two main lipids found in the blood, cholesterol and triglycerides, also known as serum lipoproteins. Cholesterol is an essential chemical within the body, without it we will die. Yet, if our blood levels of cholesterol and triglycerides are too high, we are at risk for coronary artery disease which is a major cause of death in the United States today.

Cholesterol is an essential element contained in all human cell membranes; it is a structural component of steroid hormones and bile acids. Triglycerides are important in helping to transfer energy from food into body cells.

Lipoproteins are categorized based on how dense they are. Density is based on the amounts of cholesterol triglycerides and apoproteins. The densest and smallest are called high-density lipoproteins or HDL, also know at "the Good Cholesterol". Lipoproteins that are a little less dense are called low-density lipoproteins of LDL. The least dense, and the largest of the lipoproteins, are the very low-density lipoproteins or VLDL.

Follow the link for a detailed explanation.

Means the same thing as high cholesterol.

Hyperlipidemia, hyperlipoproteinemia or dyslipidemia is the presence of raised or abnormal levels of lipids and/or lipoproteins in the blood. Lipids (fatty molecules) are transported in a protein capsule, and the density of the lipids and type of protein determines the fate of the particle and its influence on metabolism.

Depends on what kind of hyperlipidemia you have? There are several types. The jist of it is-elevated levels of lipids in the blood plasma.

The term "hyperlipidemia" describes an extreme elevation in any of several lipid (fatty) substances in the bloodstream, as in conditions such as hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia. Most of these disorders cause an increased risk for atherosclerosis, which is a buildup of plaque within the arterial wall that can lead to heart attacks, strokes, and gangrene. An elevated high-density (healthy) cholesterol, however, is a hyperlipidemia that protects from plaque buildup. To be called a hyperlipidemia, the value of the lipid elevation generally has to be greater than 95 percent above the average level for a person of the same age and gender in the population. Most hyperlipidemias are acquired through genes transmitted from one or both parents, although some persons may acquire a hyperlipidemia through dietary means.

What is hyperlipidemia?
Hyperlipidemia is an elevation of lipids (fats) in the bloodstream. These lipids include cholesterol, cholesterol esters (compounds), phospholipids and triglycerides. They're transported in the blood as part of large molecules called lipoproteins.

These are the five major families of blood (plasma) lipoproteins:

chylomicrons
very low-density lipoproteins (VLDL)
intermediate-density lipoproteins (IDL)
low-density lipoproteins (LDL)
high-density lipoproteins (HDL)
What are the types of hyperlipidemia?

When hyperlipidemia is defined in terms of a class or classes of elevated lipoproteins in the blood, the term hyperlipoproteinemia is used. Hypercholesterolemia is the term for high cholesterol levels in the blood. Hypertriglyceridemia refers to high triglyceride levels in the blood.

Lots of great answers here - some of them quite complicated

In simple terms - this is how to translate hyperlipidemia

Hyper = too much of

Lipid = cholesterol and other body fats

Emia = in the blood

Hyperlipidemia means "too much cholesterol or other fats in the blood"

Hope this helps
