Hospice care question?

I need this for a report, so hopefully someone will be able to help me out!

How much does it usually cost to have someone come to your own home to take care of you? This *is* called Hospice care, when they come to your house, right? Also, are there any negatives about this?

If anyone has any other info on "Home Support Workers", please let me know!

Thanks to everyone who has answered -- you've all helped me so much!

Hospice care is usually provided at no charge as this service is to sit and be with someone who is terminally ill.I hope this is not your case.
A Home support worker is the person who would come to your home to help you with all things-personal care-housework-meal preparation etc. In Canada the charges vary from province to province and even city to city.I know most home support businesses will charge you based on income factors.Sometimes it is cheaper to hire privately a care attendant with some health care basics.Health insurers may or may not help in this area too depending on coverage.Hope this helps. As for negatives-of course you could find you're not amicable to each other, among other problems, screening is important.

Hospice care is also to support the family around the person that is terminally ill. They make educational materials available for the family members to know what to expect in the different stages getting nearer to the end. They will administer pain management meds too. Once the person dies, they clean the person up and change their cloths if neccessary, call to have the bodie taken away etc.

Hospice care is a kind of care. When you receive hospice care, it means you are terminal and all medical interventions are stopped. All hospice care is DNR: do not resuscitate. There are no codes blue in a hospice. If you go into cardiac arrest or stop breathing, there is no attempt to revive you.

Health ceases to be the goal of treatment, or is supplanted by "comfort". This means pain medication, as much as the patient needs to not hurt. There is no fear of addiction, because the patient will not survive. Another medication is anti-anxiety medication, to calm the patient in the face of death. And anything else the patient needs to die comfortably and as free of pain as possible. This kind of care permits family and friends to spend time with the patient, and for the patient to say good-bye without having to deal with huge discomfort or even agony.

Hospice care is most frequently provided in hospitals or hospital wings specifically designated "hospice", though there is a growing trend toward providing hospice care in the home. This, of course, is more expensive, but it may become the thing of the future.

I don't know how much hospice care is. The amount would probably vary greatly depending on where you live and whether you are talking about a hospice or in-home hospice care. You could probably google around and find the right phrase, and could probably come up with the costs for both in your region.

Hope this answers your question.

Unfortunately, this subject is very fresh to me. A friend of mine has Stage IV cancer and just went into a residential hospice last week. I spoke with the Hospice nurse beforehand and also a social worker. In-home Hospice is paid for by Medicare and is no cost to the patient. They come with a host of a support team.... nurse, chaplain, bathing aids, etc., but they do not give 24-hr day care. They may come once a day for an hour, or whatever is needed by the patient. But, you would still need to hire sitters to stay with the patient round the clock, and they can get pretty expensive (~$20-25 hr). A residential hospice (Hospice House) where the patient actually lives costs $150 a day. There are also some nursing homes that have hospice wings, costing $130 per day. All hospice care is strictly pallative care (comfort care). It is used when no further treatments can be done. Hospice is a wonderful organization! They will keep you very comfortable. A hospital is limited by law as to how much pain medication that they can give (every so many hours); hospice is not. No negatives so far. These costs may vary from state to state. Hope this helps.
