Hospice care? has anyone ever made it out? |
does anyone know of anyone who has gone into to hospice care and gotten better made it out of hospice and lived for a substantial or at least a a year out of hospice. just trully a question im curious about. and can you tell me the condition and how they got better? Yes, it was someone famous and the name escapes me... I want to say he was a comedian or 60 minutes reporter... He said goodbye to family and friends, and just hung on. I believe he is still alive and has written a book. I am going to star your question in case the name comes to me. Hospice care is usually reserved for those patients who are going to die within six months. Working in a hospital though I have seen a couple of cases where a patient was actually removed from Hospice care because they were doing better. As I recall it was some type of respiratory illness like emphysema or something but I don't remember the specifics. I have heard stories from hospice nurses about ppl that have gotten better or at least live longer than the dr's had given them. Hospice is not a place you go to get better though. The hospice here has been great to me and my fanily both my grandmother and grandfather had hospice care at the end stages of cancer. I really don't know what we would have done without them. The answer to your question is yes. Patients (pts) who are enrolled in a hospice program must have a certification by a responsible physician as to a terminal diagnosis and a life expectancy of six months or less. This does not means that all pts will die within six months. I have seen pts with some types of cancer who live well beyond six months and have to be recertified for hospice. More unusual would be those who are actually disenrolled from hospice because they are doing relatively well with their terminal illness after some period of time. These pts may have benefited from good nursing care, nutritional support, physical therapy support if needed, spiritual and psychological support. The pt may also be taking certain meds that may stabilize their condition. No matter what , these pts will continue to need as strong a support system as possible. You should consider discussing this question and other concerns with a responsible physician in person. Hope this helps. My great aunt did it - she went in, she came out in two months. She did die, but that was7 years later. My grandmother had a different story: we hired home hospice care for her and she died on their first day. Hi. I am a hospice volunteer and two of my patients left hospice because they became stable and even improved to such that they were discharged. One, a 96 year old man with Alzheimer's, became more open and sociable and was no longer declining. He came back into hospice two years later and died. I have heard of other instances but these two were my personal experiences. |
