My girlfriend's dad is getting ready to pass. The Doc is recommending Hospice Care. Any type of checklist??

My g/f is only 22. Taking care of her Dad with Brain, lung, and liver cancer. Hard times are felt by all, I am in the Navy far far away from her and need to assist her as much as I can. I really need a good Hospice checklist for her to follow. Any help would be great! Thanks!!!!

HAVE her contact the hospital social worker thats part of their job!

Check for deficiencies from the last "survey". They have to give you that info when you ask, if are you looking for residential. Best when there are LIMITED people to care for the person.

If you are doing in home- then look at staff qualifications. (And who is going to care for him when she isn't there?)

The one thing I tell people is make sure the hospice person will keep her dad painfree. I can't tell you how many times I've been asked "can I give more pain med. He's already had some. We don't want to cause any problems". I know it sounds harsh, but he's going to die anyway. Give him whatever it takes to make sure there is no pain. Might it expedite things? Maybe. But what's the prognosis? Keep him comfortable at all costs.

My thoughts are with all of you at this difficult time.Your GF should look for a hospice company that is able to provide some volunteers hopefully daily, a nurse every day for awhile to check or pain (also 24 hr tel availability)a home health aide for few hrs daily and medical equipment (hosp bed, commode, O2, pain meds,bath seat etc).Also social worker to help her family with emotional issues during and after his passing.I hope this list helped.

I am so so very sorry to hear about your girlfriend's father.My prayers and thots are with her, even tho i do not know them.When my husband found out he was terminal, he chose to come home and have hospice come into our house and help me with his every need. There really is no check list, they will provide your girlfriend with reading material, also if she needs, a social worker, clergy, they make sure her father will have everything for his comfort, including hospital equip. meds, and other hospice workers that volunteer to bathe him, sit with him, just about anything your girlfriend has the need for. They are a wonderful organization, filled with professionals and with the most loving understanding and care. At times, they will laugh with you, and even cry with you. After a loved one has passed they will continue to support the loved ones, left behind, i recieved material in the mail monthly with advice on how to cope with upcoming holidays, and other significant events..and where to find local support groups. I could go on and on about how wonderful they were at a time when i thot i could not handle things and they were there helping and teaching me how. It was possible for my husband to be here with us when he passed away. best of luck.

Hospice will give her everything she needs, You dont have to worry about her. They will support her and help her and her dad in so many ways.
