Please help me with ideas of items that I can place in care baskets for hospice patients..school project? |
I have chosen Hospice as a school project. I have to develop a product that will benefit the group that I have chosen for my project. I would like to prepare baskets for patients. Can you give me any suggestions on what I can put in the baskets to help bring a smile to these patients that could really use a smile... thanks for your help Bibles, poetry, cards signed by classmates with pics of puppies, kittens or babies. Flowers or plants. Chocolate (for people who can have it). Just a few ideas. lollipops.... cancer patients get very dry mouths....also chapstick....some baby wipes...a robe....some stationary just in case they are still alert.... Remember the patients are still people. Anything you can do to make their day a tiny bit better is wonderful. A simple funny card, a crossword puzzle book, a box of crayons and a coloring book, and even a cruise line pamphlet are good ideas. A good book you can sit and read to the patient is wonderful. How much do you plan on spending? For the big budget: A set of cotton sheets and pillow cases with threadcount over 400. You need to check with the Hospice Center and ask them. They can tell you what patients need. If you really want to make a difference, spend time with them instead. A basket of junk is okay, but they would rather have someone to talk to and do things with. Magazines, stuffed animals, blankets-small of course if you plan on putting them in baskets, sit and talk with them anything that brings joy to them at this point and time in their life. I noticed when I was in a sewing store recently that they are selling micro beads for pillows. I find pillows stuffed with micro beads to be very soothing when used to cushion body parts that are aching. Many times those who are terminal are in extreme pain. Just a thought. Oh, what a nice project. I would call a local hospice. They need volunteer hours according to medicare guidelines. (so many hours per x number of patients.) I am a hospice nurse and there are several items different patients need. Personal care items are great. (lotion, soaps, etc.) But for families of patients in hospice, a memory box is an excellent idea. They can put photos or stories about their loved one in it as a keepsake/momento holder. A prayer journal is a great idea for all parties (hospice workers too!) Good luck with your project. Remember to log the hours you spend on your project and you can turn them in to the hospice to help them out too. |
