Hormones in the water...?

i saw on t.v. where the hormones from birth control pills is the main contributor to male fish developing female organs. supposed the hormones can not be filtered from the water that you and i drink. now, should birth control pills be illegal since they pose a major threat to all things that consume and live in the water. also, could this be the reason for young men who develope breast(can't remember the medical term). no radicals please, just trying to get a feeling for this problem. it is major.

it is proven that it does affect the sex of fish. and there are many more articles on the subject than just three.

I sincerely doubt that a male fish would grow female organs from human hormones. They are an entirely different type of species, so it wouldn't have anywhere near the same impact. I'm still chuckling with the mental picture of a fish with boobs, of course.... but I'm sure it would be all over the news if a male fish had any female organs (the organ that produce the eggs is the only organ I can think of off the top of my head that would distinguish them). It sounds like hogwash.

(edit): I just did a search on Yahoo for "fish birth control pill", and only 3 of the top 10 hits mentioned fish that had 2 sexes.... but two of them were theoretical future impacts (one citing the third), and the third was a study by some Canadian scientists that actually put full dose birth-control pills into a lake in Ontario for 3 years. That's a huge dose compared to whatever trace amount that would come from the sewers and flushed down the toilet.
The article is listed here:

To get that kind of dose in a larger water supply, it would take dumping a few month's worth of pills for centuries in order to get a high enough potency in a body of water as large as one of the great lakes to have any problems like this, much less the whole body of water world-wide (like the oceans). As long as people don't dump large quantities of birth control pills (which would be a huge waste of money) into the general water supply, this will not be any sort of "problem" for hundreds of eons..... and I'm sure we'll have found a solution WAY before that.

Since most of the fish survives on algaes or planktons, and only the meat eaters are endangered by the way that you describe, there is no reason to stop birtcontrol pills, even the result of it in seawaters will happen by more fish, if the meateaters are swiped out by this man altered evolution.
