The DSM and homosexuality?

if homosexuality was in the DSM and is not there anymore does it invalidate all things in the DSM? like if they said homosexuality was a mental disorder how can we give any level of acceptance to what is in the DSM now?

As the times change, so to our definitions of what's a disorder. The DSM has been revised and revised over and over again as we discover new things. Just because one thing was in it at one point in time, and isn't now, doesn't mean it is entirely invalid. That would be like saying that because all disorders that are in it now, weren't in it before, the whole thing is false.

Using this line of reasoning we would throw out all of medicine since the medical community used to treat schizophrenia with lobotomies and high fevers with leeches.

Ego dystonic homsexuality, by the way, IMHO should most definitely be re-introduced in the DSM-V. TPTB at APA, however, don't have the guts to do it. Truth be known, however, EGO DYSTONIC homosexuality, essentially, boils down to a person being uncomfortable with his/her sexual choices to such an extent that it becomes emotionally paralyzing.

Ought we discount those members of society currently practicing homosexuality and are torn apart by it? No, I submit to you that we should not. I submit to you that those who are uncomfortable with their homosexuality ought to be afforded the same resources that others enjoy. Their pain ought not be 'written off' just because APA doesn't have the brass ones to recognize it.

Either something is a sickness, or it is not. How can you vote whether something is or isn't? It doesn't lend much credibility to the DSM, or the AMA, does it?
The DSM is really more for the coding, so they have a number to put down for their insurance claims. The quacks gotta get paid.
