If Homosexuality was considered a mental illness, why isn't it anymore?

I read somewhere that homosexuality was considered a mental illness until around 1976. Why isn't it considered a mental illness anymore?

Because we have realized that there are biological factors involved, and become more informed about the facts. And now that more people are able to come out and express themselves, we are able to realize that it's not mentally ill people, it's just people that are born different for whatever reason.

I didn't know that....1976? wow!

People change their minds about things. Killing children used to be illegal.

psychiatrists etc worked out that homosexuals were just as sane and healthy as heterosexuals

cause the brains evolved too much

Mental illness, as with any illness by definition is a condition that adversely affects one's health or quality of life; life threatening. Homosexuality is not life threatening, and for many people the only reason living with it can lower the quality of their lives is because society has been slow to accept it, but there is nothing about it that inherently harms your body. Therefore it's not an illness. Took us until 1976 apparently to realize this I guess.

Because mental illness can be treated and this made homosexuality a sin after you're cured. We don't want our sins to be sins so we strive to find a way to cover them up or excuse them or make them acceptable. You can run from God but you can't hide. Your day of reckoning will come. Then we will find out if SIN is anything against Gods will.

That's a bloody good question! I'm sure there are lots of people nowadays who really do sympathize with gays - but let me put in my own cynical suspicions...

Whether you admit it or not, the gay movement/ market has become quite a strong financial (and even political and even religious) power. For a nation or a politician or businessman to ignore the gay movement - would be quite foolish in this present 3rd millennium. But of course there are the old-fashioned folk who dare risk being unpopular by opposing the gay movement.

I hope I made sense.

Well Homosexuality can be a illness but not in the sense as a disorder . If your a christian you could be upset that your living this lifestyle and it could cause you to become anxious or depressed you know what mean?
