Is homosexuality a mental illness? |

NO. I am convinced there is a lack of masculine genes or femine genes in your body's make up. That is why there is gaydar Nobody knows. no... and people who always say god doesnt approve of gays or w/e..... what happen to god created everyone--thou shall not judge... ever think of that? No. Homosexuality is not a mental illness nor is it just a choice. I believe it is because of a lack of male/female genes or perhaps too much. There is no medical or scientific proof of what causes homosexuality, so there is no way to actually answer this question. No, not according to the American Medical Association or the American Psychiatric Association...I am gay and I am not mentally ill or insane...however it does make me a little crazy living in this CRAZY WORLD!!!! despite all of these answers, i dont think it is such as a mental "illness" but i think that the person puts themself in the mindset that they are a homosexual. Really, just because you have feelings for the same sex doesn't mean your a homosexual, everyone has those feelings, but homosexuals give into it. How could it be am illness? How do you get it. It was removed in Edition 3 and has been kept out up to date (Edition 4). This manual is used to diagnose mental illnesses. In short, homosexuality is a natural part of the world (found in many living species) - population check? then half of nature must be mentally ill. The American Psychiatric Association, in their Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM), where all diagnoses come from, has categorized homosexuality as a mental disorder, which is vastly different from a mental illness. A mental disorder includes a willful choice in one's behavior, which is not true in a mental illness. I'm sure there has been immense socio-political pressure to have the American Psychiatric Association remove homosexuality as a diagnostic category of any kind, but now that I'm retired from the mental health profession after 20+ years, I don't know if they've knuckled under the pressure. In some cases, it may be a choice or I believe that some people truly are attracted to those of their own sex. the fact he gave us a choice is debatable because although we have freewill to carry out whatever actions we choose in our life, our natural sexual feelings which we have little control over are not easily overcome and why should they be? if a man is naturally attracted to other men only and same for women how can it really be a choice? the only bit choice comes into is whether to act on these feelings so really the only choice comes down to being celibate your whole life or being gay! i know which one i would choose if i were gay anyway! so being gay i do not consider in any way to be a mental illness and i find very offensive to gay people. it is just the way some people are for whatever reason whether it is genetic biologic or environmental or a combination has not been discovered and does it really matter anyway? if there was a known reason i doubt many gay people would want a 'cure' for their 'illness' It is not a mental illness! I am perfectly healthy and very emotionally stable. In fact I am a therapist and guess what- I am gay!! Every species known to man has gay members in it! It is just the way some folks happen to be built! I DON'T BELIEVE IT IS ANYMORE THAN HETEROSEXUALITY IS. No! It's the choice of the person. Is to respect them for who they are. |
