Hives in reaction to Amoxycillin...taking Prednisone and allergy meds...how much longer until they go away?

I've had hives for about 2-3 weeks now and they are making me really exhausted. I am 100% confident they came as a delayed hypersensitivity to Amoxycillin I was taking for strep throat as the doctor explained to me. Anyway, I was on prednisone for the first week and it looked like they were completely gone, but then they came back and I'm back on prednisone. If I understand correctly, I'll have hives until the Amoxycillin is out of my system. Has anyone else had experience with this? How long did it take?

They don't itch that much at all, but I do notice being really exhausted at times (which isn't a surprise since the doctor said they take quite a toll on the body).

The Amoxycillin would be completely out of your system after a few days, so the presence of Amoxycillin is not what is causing this problem. The half-life of Amoxycillin in the bloodstream is about 1.5 hours.

Allergic reactions are extremely complex, and its possible that you have an allergy to something other than Amoxycillin, and your immune system went into hyperdrive when the other allergen was combined with Amoxycillin. If this happened, then you may need to address the other allergy.

Prednisone is great for acute allergic reactions, but it not the best way to treat a common allergy. I suggest trying something like Claritin, or Benedryl at nighttime (it usually makes people very sleepy), and see if there is any relief. If either antihistamine works, then, you can continue using the antihistamine, or maybe see about getting a prescription antihistamine. Otherwise, it might be a good idea to see an allergist to get to the bottom of things. The side effects of Prednisone are too severe to remain on the drug for any length of time unless there is no other recourse.

i had the exact same reaction to amoxycillin when i took it. my dodctor told me that the hives will go away on their own. you don't need to stop taking the pills, b/c the hives won't go away if you stop. mine lasted about a week and then they went away, but once they've started, you have to let them run their course.
