Hives.....please assist me !!!!!!!?

i suddenly broke out in hives and i have some benedryl but it says for allergy and cold and when i look at the symptoms that it treats, it only lists cold symptoms no allergic reactions..does any one know if i can take that to make the hives go away or no..and will hydrocortisone (spelling??) help also?

as far as i know im only allergic to peanuts but nothing i ate had peanuts in it (that i knw of) i ate dinner and a few hours l8r i broke out in hives, but no, it isnt plain benedryl, its for allergies and cold

Yes, use the Benadryl. Its the best antihistamine to use for hives. Take as directed every 6 hours, call the doctor if they haven't improved after 2 doses of Bendryl. You can expect them to kind of come and go, but you shouldn't be getting worse after 2 doses. Go to ER immediately if you have difficulty swallowing or breathing or swelling of the face and lips.
No, don't use hydrocortisone over large areas of the body (I'm assuming you have hives all over.) You can use calamine-not Caladryl-it can cause overdose of the ingredient in Benadryl. But the best thing I've found to relieve the itching is a baking soda bath. Just add about an ounce to a lukewarm bath and soak as long as you want, repeat whenever you want! Good luck and happy itching!

If it's the plain old Benadryl (diphenhydramine), then it should help your itching and hives. But you need to find out the source of the hives - what you are allergic to, or if it's nerves, etc.

It will make you sleepy, though. In fact diphenhydramine is the main ingredient in most over the counter sleep aids.

I have been battling hives for 3 weeks now. Best to go to the doctor and get a shot.

Monitor everything you eat to see what is causing is. Sodas, citrus fruits, acid etc???

Regular benedryl will help. But it will also make you sleepy.

Any form of Benadryl will help, but as the others have stated, it will make you sleepy so best not to drive.
Hydrocortisone might help but you don't want to slather it all over your body (because some will be absorbed into your bloodstream), just dot it on the individual hives.

Also, the hives could be caused by stress rather than an allergy but the treatment is the same.

sounds like you're allergic to something besides peanuts and it was in the dinner. Guess you have to make a list of what was in the dinner and check them out one by one.

I suggest sticking with the regular type of Benadryl allergy. It is fast acting but will knock you out quickly so make sure that you wont be driving anytime soon after drinking the medication. You can also drink the 24-hour allergy medicines like Claritin but they arent fast acting. It takes them awhile to take effect, however, they do stop your allergic reactions (ie. hives) from showing up for at least 24-48 hours and they are non-drowsy.

If your hives have already come out, Claritin doesnt help. You need to take Benadryl Allergy instead.
