Drug allergies - Why do I still have hives over 2 weeks later?

I was taking doxycycline (antibiotic), the first night after taking it I remember my legs feeling itchy at night. But no hives. After 3 days small hives started appearing only on my arms. I spoke to my doctor on the phone who advised me to stop taking it immediately. She also mentioned benadryl can help stop the breakouts.

Well here I am nearly two weeks later and I still am itchy and breaking out randomly into little patches of hives. What's worse is it's moved from my arms to my legs and hips.

Was I mistaken on my diagnosis that I was having an allergic reaction to the drug? Is there something else going on? I already read online it's hard to find out the true causes of hives. I haven't changed soaps or ditergents lately. My life has been pretty much the same aside from this drug. If I don't find the cause will I have hives forever? If it is the doxycycline, is it normal to have hives still forming after 2 weeks? I'm so sick of being itchy all the time!!!

If it is an allergic reaction, the reaction will continue until all of the substance is out of your system. And in my experience the hives will go away when they want to. Sometimes I've had them go away overnight and other times it takes weeks or months. Benedryl will help with the redness and itchiness but can't completely cure them, unfortunately only time will do that.

If your wondering if you were wrong, if you don't think they are getting better and especially if you think that they are getting worse go in and see your doctor about them. A prescription for a cortisone cream will help them to go away faster.

Something more is going on so go see the doc to find out what it is.

go get a blood test =it should tell you what are causing the hives

the drug may have a long half life and take a while to get out of your system, if things get worse contact your doctor!
