Will hives that result from cats go away without treatment, and/or will they come back again if treated?

...we were fostering a cat, and some of my family members started getting hives. Will the hives remain treated if continually taking an antihistamine (while the cat is still here) or will they eventually be able to stop taking the antihistamine?

If everyone's allergic, you can't keep her there. Benadryl or other antihistamines will work, but you will have to keep using them until you remove the allergen, the cat. Also, if there is dander in the furniture, the air, etc., you may still get hives. Also, the effects of the antihistamines will eventually stop working the more you use them so it's best to just get rid of the cat.

You will have to wait for the cat to go away till the hives go away.
They will go away on their own when the cat leaves.

hives are an allergic reaction they probbally will go away but u have to worry about making your breathing worse

Once the cat is removed from the household and all items are cleaned and sterilized, everyone should be able to stop taking the antihistamine without the hives returning. The main thing is to get rid of the irritant or cause of the hives. I am impressed that your family is willing to foster a cat, maybe next time try a different animal. It sounds like your family may be very allergic to felines.

You may not be reacting to just the cat you are fostering...It could be something on the cat itself...Have you tried bathing the cat with special feline soap? you may want to look at that angle, too...Talk to a vet over the phone...

Some years back I had the "scratch panel" test done on my back. The first scratch that welted up was the dog & cat scratch. I did a 3 year regime of allergy shots. It was annoying but I no longer have allergies to the stuff I did.
