I break out in hives when I consume red wine or vinegar on salad.I can drink white wine with no problems. Why?

My hives last four to five days and leave through my eyes, lips and fingers. All of the above swell to twice there size.Is there any medication that can control both the hives and duration? Sometime other unknown foods cause same condition, but red wine and vinegar are the main culprits.Thanking you in advance.

Sounds like you might be allergic to the sulfates that are prominent in red wine and and many vinegars. It's possible that golden raisins, dried fruits, and green grapes have the same affect? Stop eating and drinking the culprits, then slowly reintroduce them into your body one by one. Benedryl can sometimes help the symptoms. See a dermatologist or allergist if the problem becomes unbearable.

You need to go in an get tested for food allergies. DO NOT consume red wine or vinegar under any circumstances as the reaction you are having is severe. You need to see an allergist and get tested and he will most likely prescribe an epi pen for you to use when accidently do come in contact with red wine or vinegar that you didn't know was in the food you ate. This is serious so call now and get an appointment set up with an allergist right away as you may not be so lucky to just have hives and swelling next time. Your next time could cause you throat to close off and kill you.

I'm guessing that you are just allergic to something specific in those certain foods that you haven't pinpointed yet. Could be hard to do, but avoid those foods and drinks you know you have the allergy to and make a note of those you come to find that you have this reaction to. Maybe then you can narrow down what it could be.... I believe red wine contains some vinegar... not positive, so vinegar could be the culprit. See an allergist or just your internal medicine dr... there may be some kind of med to help, but prob not to prevent.

My daughter has the same problem. It is the sulfites in red wine. Stick to the white and you SHOULD be OK. No guarantees anymore. There are so many additives and contaminants in the foods and drinks that we consume today that there is no telling what kind of reaction we can expect. Take Benadryl for your hives, but beware taking any drug and consuming alcohol. If you are going to drink alcohol I would take it at least one hour in advance. Good luck.
