Daughter got severe hives last night, had been complaining of being itchy for days.?

My 4 yo daughter had been telling me for 2 or 3 days, usually in the morning that she was "ohhhh soooo itchy" but I looked and didn't see anything. Then last night, I promised her a banana split because she did so good getting her x-ray (she currently has pneumonia). After about 6 bites of the banana split she went to the bathroom and yelled "mommy come help me". This was her first ever deal with hives. She had them on her wrist, forarms, creases of her elbow, on her hips, buttocks, groin, thighs, belly, and back. The hives on her groin area, hips and wrist seem to be huge.
My question is, could those "itchy" days where she didn't have the hives on her have lead up to the severe outbreak of hives or something in that banana split? *Note*
all things in the banana split she has had before.
How long do they last?
Is it premature to make an appt with an allergist to see what she is allergic to being that this was a one time thing?

As I type this some 12 hours after the first onset she is saying that she is "itchy" again and I looked at where she is itchy and she is getting hives again.

She has been playing with a new pair of jelly shoes. Could she be allergic to the plastic/vinyl in those?

I am guessing that she actually has a drug allergy! Get her to the doctor now. If she is on antibiotics for the pneumonia she is most likely allergic to that. The feeling itchy for days can lead to the build up in her system and finally the breakout in hives. I hope that isn't the case, but call the pediatrician asap!

Drug allergies can develop at any time, but what you are describing is a systemic reaction not a localized reaction. A localized reaction could be something that she touched. A systemic reaction is far more serious. Call the doctor and speak with one of the nurses. Did you tell the doctor about the being itchy for four days? Is she on any cough medicine over the counter or prescription? I'd call and see about taking her back in.

is she taking an antibiotic for her pneumonia? first guess would be a reaction to a drug she is on, then a food allergy...

Call the doctor, now, the one who prescribed the azo. She is allergic to something, probably the antibiotic. The itchy was the first signs of allergy.
Yes, people can be allergic to manmade shoes, I am, but usually, that is a local rash, just where the shoes are, but it can be "all over" too.
After you call the doctor, did you use new soap or detergent, was it something in the sundae?
Hopefully, doctor will give her something oral for the itchy, and perhaps something for her skin.
DO NOT give her anymore azo or any other meds until you speak with a doctor. Allergies can go from bad to worse quickly , and involve breathing problems.

Please call your Doctor now.She could be having a reaction to the antibiotic-and yes people can "become"allergic to one they have had before, and yes there can be a build up.After hives comes breathing trouble sometimes please don't wait.

I wonder if she has a latex(rubber) allergy. People who have latex allergies have crossover reactions to bananas. Her hives are probably worse know because her immune system is weak from the pneumonia.
