Need a hip replacement and NO Insurance?

My hip, which has bothered me for years, is finally shot! Now I need a hip replacement & have no insurance. What do I do? Where do I start? Is there any salvation?

You could consider traveling to another country (India, for example) where the cost of the surgery + travel expenses + recovery time at a resort is claimed to be a fraction of the cost of having the surgery in the US. Please understand that I did not do this myself and only mention it because Indian surgeons and hospitals are actively recruiting patients for these types of procedures. It even has a name: "medical tourism". I guess your other option is having the surgery in the US and paying for it yourself. Try to get the price down as much as possible. Negotiate if you have to.

First, research the hospital where you want to have your surgery. Secondly, make sure your doctor has privileges to perform the surgery at that particular hospital. Next, go to the chosen hospital and ask to speak to someone in Financial Assistance, they will give you very general information on the process. Once you are scheduled for your surgery, go in for your Pre-operative work up, it is then the Financial Counselor will be able to screen you for assistance. Provide the documentation they ask for, they aren't trying to know all of your personal business- the requested documentation is based on adherence to state and federal regulations. The counselor will be able to tell you what programs you may be eligible for, but eligibility is not guaranteed. Good Luck!!!!

You could consider medical-tourism... there are a lot of countries that have good doctors, good hospitals - and would be much cheaper than doing it in the States without insurance (I'm assuming you are in the US). Medical-tourism is very popular now. Here's an interesting link....
