I have a hip replacement 10 yrs ago, someone close to me has possibly got mercer staph infection? |
I had a hip replacement 10 yrs ago and will have to have the other done sometime. But my bad hip has been bothering me lately and my fiance may have this mercer staph infection. He has had it before. They are treating it with an antibiotic. Should I go to my doctor and be checked? i am sorry to hear this. i am not sure what "mercer" means? i am australian, here it is called "staph aureous" or "MRSA". or commonly known as gold staph. if the infection is a "super bug" or a "hospital acquired infection" it means it is resistant to powerful antibiotics such as vancomycin. it doesn't hurt to visit your GP- the rule of thumb is- if you're concerned, get it checked out. it's good to have a good relationship with your GP. good luck! I'd definitely have it checked out since that's highly contagious, however, I don't think that's why your hip replacement is bothering you. that is about par for an artificial hip, it probably needs replaced again! Has he been tested for MRSA? You said he's "had" it before. Once MRSA is on or in your body, it's always there. This is what I've been told after getting MRSA in a hospital setting after bypass surgery. It's a very serious infection that can kill people with strong immune systems. The most they can do is control MRSA. It's a scary infection. Make sure you wash all your blankets, sheets, pillow cases and his clothes in very hot water and bleach. Don't use the same towels as he does. It's passed through body fluids. Please get checked if a doctor will do it, many don't believe patients about MRSA. Good luck and good testing. I hear nothing to indicate you have a Staph infection. Take precautions with hand washing and avoid contact. Have your hip surgery. if u have a weak immune system due to some reason or the other u could get yourself checked. it usually doesnt trouble much if you have a strong immunity. but since you have an apprehension, go ahead. it does spread. You may indeed be ready for a second hip replacement and then you have to be germ free. Why not call your doctor and see what he says. I would go in and get checked. A septic joint is an orthopedic emergency. A bone scan may be recommended, to see if your bone is "reactive" around the site of the replacement. This will only be accomplished through the presciption from your physician. If you replacement gets infected it will have to come out... Therefore.. please go in to your doctor. And make sure that you are correct in the fact that your fiance has MRSA, or methocillin resistent staph aureus.... perhaps they would like to treat you prophalatically. Please just go in, it isn't worth it to get an infection in the hip replacement. You should definately go to your doctor. You could get an infection at the site of your hip replacement which could be very hard to treat. I've seen patients hospitalize because they have developed infections at sites of knee replacements and hip replacements. |
