Sugestions about hip replacement in a 28 yrs female?

Im 28 years old, female and been told that i need a hip replacement. Im in pain and because of a genetic problem i may need a new hip. >Any sugestions, comments will be wellcomed .Marian.

I just had a total right metal on metal hip implant 15 days ago. I am 42 and had arthritis secondary to trauma. The surgery was done under local anesthesia via a spinal catheter. I was walking around (with a walker) in 24 hours. The pain I had post surgery was minimal and well controlled with oral agents.
My advise is to make sure you have family/friends to help out once you are released from the hospital. You won't be able to perform many of your usual daily activities for the first 2-3 weeks. Make sure you have books, dvds and other interests to occupy your mind.
Make sure to follow the hip precautions from your surgeon and take you blood thinner to prevent DVTs. Walking on the new hip is the best Physical therapy! So make sure you walk!
Best of luck!

As far as I know, the technology hasn't developed far enough yet to allow someone as young as you to have a hip replacement.

Replacements only last for about 20 years and really cannot be "redone" once they wear out (without significant side effects). So, you have to be older to warrant getting the replacement.

Obviously there are probably exceptions to the rule, but you should be talking to your doctor about how long the replacement will last.

Get a second opinion, and if the second doctor agrees, then go for it. You're very young for this type of surgury, and need to understand that the replacement only lasts so long and will probably have to be repeated in about 10 years or so. It's senseless to suffer, if you can take care of the problem safely.

My father just had his replaced due to arthritis. This is his 2nd hip replacement (one left and one right). If you're in pain, do it ASAP. My dad had his surgery on a Monday, was home by Thursday, and by Monday of the following week was already in less pain than before the surgery.

Also, talk to the surgeon about what manufacturer's parts he uses. Check out the manufacturer's website, and see if you can make an appointment before the surgery with the sales rep (your surgeon will certainly know how to get ahold of them if you can't find the info on the website). They'll know all about the product, as well as the surgical procedures (and options that your surgeon might not bring up due to their preferences). Also, find out if the sales rep will be on site during the surgery. This is not an uncommon practice, as occasionally the surgeon will need additional parts. If you have a chance to introduce the sales rep to the person or people who'll be in the waiting room during surgery, do so. The rep might have the opportunity to update your loved ones before the doctor gets out of the OR, which can be a nice touch.

At only 28, it's likely that you'll need to have the new hip replaced again. The glues and such that they use have limited lifespans, and will break down over time. Talk to the doctor and the sales rep about what the expectations are on this, and what can be done to limit the risks - for example, sometimes it can be done without glue, which obviously eliminates one of the risk factors.

Below is a link to an interesting website. One of the hip manufacturers (my brother works there) has an interactive hip online. It's kinda neat to see what's going on inside. Their site has a bit of info on hip replacement that might be helpful for you.

One last thing...If you can, avoid being put under a general anesthetic. Ask for a spinal...you won't feel a thing, and you won't have the risks that come with the general.

Good luck Marian! I hope all goes well for you!!
