Knee pain after hip replacement surgery?

I had a hip replacement at age 21 and am now 31 years old. I've been having knee pain. Especially after doing things like standing and walking for a long time, like when going to the mall , grocery shopping for a couple hours and after playing paintball. Do I need a knee brace? I have a lift in my shoe to to make up for the difference in leg length. It helps when I got a taller lift but still have some pain. Can anyone tell me if a knee brace would help

Please don't try to self-treat. Your very young age and the fact that you have already had a replaced hip for 10 years means that you cannot mess around when it comes to joint pain. You don't state the reason for your initial hip replacement (was it because of AVN or dysplasia or a hip injury?) Instead, have your knee and hip checked out by your orotho surgeon and tell him/her about the pain you are having. Your knee might just be strained or injured and need rest and/or some kind of physical therapy or you might be having referred pain from somewhere else (such as the hip). You may indeed be correct about trying a knee brace but wouldn't it be more sensible to get the doctor's take on the matter first before you go spending money on braces, massages, and other nostrums?

A knee brace would be a temp. solution. Coming from someone who's studied Massage Therapy, it sounds like you have a muscle imbalance in your leg. Try going to see a Registered Massage Therapist, and he/she can see whats wrong.

Get to the DR as soon as you can you may have a blood clot this is serious stuff

Who did you get to replace your hip at age 21 first of all?! I am 25 and desperately need my knee replaced and no one will do it for me. Knee pain is really common with hip problems and vice versa. Because with either a knee or hip problem, people tend to alter their walking thus causing problems elsewhere. For example, as I stated, I have a really bad left knee and I walk with it slightly bent and stairs are almost impossible for me, so I compensate with my hip and now I am experiencing hip pain. Unfortunately or fortunately so much of the body is connected and related and problems like this can happen.

This pain could be referred from your hip or relate to an abnormal gait. Could you have the same condition in your knee as was in your hip?

I'm not an expert in artificial joints but my understanding is that they only usually last a certain period of time (I've heard around 10 years). New ones are better than older technology so your next one should last longer than this one. The more you do the faster you can wear it out. (they last longer in your average 80 year old than 21Y/O)!

You sound like you're doing really well but it may be worth checking that the joint hasn't decayed/ subluxed/ fractured especially if you feel it has changed suddenly or gradually deteriorated. Get a physio to help if you think it could be your gait. OT can help with the right brace if appropriate. Chiropracters are excellent for undoing the kinks caused by poor posture/ gait.

please see your doctor
