O, I need help. I need hip replacement surgery and have no ins. and dont qualify for medicaid, etc. what now

I wish the U.S. could have free health care, but they dont and that is where I live. I have to have a complete hip replacement surgery due to a collapsed femur. I broke my hip in Oct. 07, and had 3 pins put in it. As of Valentines Day I found out the femur collapsed and must have a replacement. Now what? I have no insurance, cant get medicaid, SSI, etc. I was taking care of my mother ( she is 93 and had a mini stroke in July and had to move in with her and take care of her. I slipped on a wet tile floor and her house insurance does not cover it. Ihave tried everything. Can anyone please help? the pain is awful now. worse than when I first broke it. Hospital charity paid for it the first time, but they wont do it again. I am stuck in a wheel chair and I want to be able to walk and work again and I am running into brick walls. Is there anything I can do? Please? I am too young to have this happen.............thanx to all for any advice. - Lauren

Charity won't take care of it due to the fact they took care of the initial surgery where I had the 3 pins put in it. The federal gov. pays for that, apparently. My dr. says they will not do it again. I have covered every angle and it seems I am being turned away from all. Sooooooooooo, does ANYONE have an idea? Jeee,I will appreciae ay feed back. Thanx, Lauren...and trust me, I need all the help I can get!!!!

Sometimes Americans without insurance who need expensive medical treatment (hip replacement included) go abroad. There is even a name for this approach: medical tourism. The total cost of the trip, the doctor, the hospital and a week or two at a resort before returning home for the patient and a companion can be had for a fraction of the cost of the treatment in the United States. Instead of going into detail, I'll give you a few links to websites that explain it:

you can apply for charity care through the hospital. talk to the billing department and they should help you out. all i can say is just pay a little at a time. they cant hold it against you and something is better than nothing. good luck and feel better.

Talk to your local health department. They may have a program like we do here. They call it we care. The Doctors do Pro Bono work at no charge. Or go to a teaching Hospital. They get the experience you get your operation. Either way you need the treatment. You are unable to work so you may qualify for food stamps, have you tried that? I know it is frustrating I am going through the same thing myself. In the state that I live if you have no children you get no medicaid unless you already have ssi! It is incredible. I wish you well. Also be sure to ask fo indigent assistance from your dr about any drugs that you are prescribed after the surgery. You may qualify to get them for free. May God be with you!
