Risks of hip replacement surgery?

i recently found out that my grandmother is scheduled to have a hip replacement surgery in about a week. i would like to know about the risks of the procedure, and if i should be worried.

Risks:
1. Not walking without the replacement.
2. Ongoing pain without the replacement.

3. The major risk is surgery in an elderly patient. General anesthetic is hard on all patients but is hardest on elderly. IF she has a good heart and good lungs she'll do fine.
4. Post op there is always the risk of infection.
5. Post op there is always the risk of Pneumonia in the elderly.

Worrying won't fix anything. But she will need rehab after the surgery and you should be sure to see her before the surgery. Surgery is always risky, but the alternatives are worse. Since it is a scheduled hip replacement rather than an emergency procedure her MD will have evaluated her risks.

No, don't worry. I had hip replacement surgery about eighteen months ago. I stayed in the hospital for a week and two weeks in rehab. My hip hurt for about ten days but, I've had worse surgery's in my life. She'll get through it fine, again don't worry she'll be fine!

The risk are the same as with any major surgery and sedation. It usually is ok and no major problems.
Depending on age, health, mental status the recovery is long and painful.
I know someone who had theirs replaced and some how they ended up splitting his femur and they had to do a second replacement within 3 weeks of each other on the same hip. But this is rarely something that happens.
Recovery is a slow process and she will need someone with her full time for awhile.
