Joint infection after total hip replacement surgery?

i had hip replacement on october 9th my doctor that i had siatice nerve pain then decided to do some blood tests he said i have a joint infection and wants to see me monday morning should i be taking a antbiotic what do they do for a joint infection

If there is indeed infection around the new joint, the prosthesis may have to be removed until the infection clears and you would be placed on massive doses of antibiotics until the infection is gone. I hope this is not the case for you. Once the infection was cleared, a new prosthetic device would be implanted. I hope that, if you do have an infection around the joint, that it will clear without removal of the hardware. Since it has been more than a month since your surgery, I believe that any infection might be considered a "late" occurence (but click on the links below for more).

For more detailed info on joint infection and how it might be treated, see these:

Be blunt with the doctor: Does the hospital you had the surgery in have a SEPSIS problem?

That is the only way you can get a joint infection.

You may have to undergo a rigorous antibiotic campaign to fight this infection.

Yes, people have died from this complication...knock it down NOW!!

I lost a family member due to this type of infection. Don't hesitate to get on the anti-biotic immediately.
