Do I need a Hip Replacement ? |
My doc says that there is a gap between my left hip socket & ball. The cartilage has worn out. He says I should have a replacement done. I am having a lot of pulling pain in my left leg It depends on your age, and the condition of your hip as determined by the physician. Most docs don't like to perform joint replacements on younger patients, unless there is an urgent need. These artificial joints wear out too, having a life span of about 20 years. Thus, they, too must be replaced periodically. If you are 40 and have a replacement now, you will need another one at about 60, then again at 80, if you're still living. That's 3 major surgeries in a lifetime. Your doc will most likely postpone a total replacement as long as possible. I would say yes. The longer you put it off the harder the recovery will be. good luck. replace that mug yo If the doctor says so. You may need a replacement or a resurfacing of the joint. These operations are serious and not recommended unless necessary. My sister-in-law just had hip replacement at the age of 48. She had no cartilage left and her pain prior to the hip replacement was immense. If your doctor suggests that you need a replacement and you are not sure, definitely seek a second opinion, as my sister-in-law did. Remember, this is major surgery and the recovery time is long, but my sister-in-law is now no longer in constant and terrible pain. Your doctor knows more about your condition then a bunch of Yahoo answerers, including me. If you do not trust his/her opinion, seek the advice of a second professional. FWIW, my mother had both her hips replaced. It greatly improved the quality of her remaining years. She went from a wheel chair to taking trips across the globe. I've had both of my hips replaced. It has made a huge difference in my life as I was fast on my way to being wheelchair-bound. |
