What is a good exercise for one who has had total hip replacement?

i'm fiftish woman with a complete R total hip replacement on the heavy side who wants to lose weight the correct way, complete with diet and exercise.

I have had both of my hips replaced in my late 50s. My BMI (27) is slightly on the overweight side but not obese. Any exercise that you can manage will work, EXCEPT you may want to avoid any high impact exercises or sports in the interest of preserving your hip replacement. Walking, of course, is not only possible but beneficial. I routinely walk a couple of miles a day and have gone as high as 5-7 miles on occasion. I prefer walking outdoors but you could also try using a treadmill (do not jog) up to 3 mph and gradually increasing the incline. Many people enjoy swimming and/or water aerobics exercises and a good workout is possible in the water. And bicycling is a low impact activity. If you go to a fitness center, try out the elliptical trainer and the stationary bike. There are many other possibilities for exercise equipment. I would avoid using a stairmaster; stairs (both ascending & descending) put added torque on the hip so it makes sense not to do stairs just to be doing them for exercise purposes.
I was lucky in that my physical therapist works in a fitness center that is open for public membership so I was able to continue some of my PT exercises and, because they knew my status as a "hippie" they worked out routines that were tailored to my hip status.
And don't forget the upper body: free weights and anything that develops your arms and shoulders. There are machines for those also.
Obviously the key to weight loss is taking in less than you expend. When you have chosen an exercise routine, use one of those charts that give you an idea of how many calories are burned in a given period of time doing a certain activity. Just be sure you don't fall in the trap where the exercise makes you hungrier and you compensate by eating more!
I'll leave it to others to tackle the diet issues - everyone seems to have a different favorite diet plan. My "diet" is geared to lowering my cholesterol and my blood sugar and it has worked to those purposes; however I'm not losing any weight.

Hi

Ive had both my hips replaced due to arthritis from a child. I am only 24... but I like to keep in good shape.

Anything low impact should be ok. Swimming is great to do and it burns a lot of calories its one of the best forms of exercise and you dont even realise your working hard!

I also do crutches to tone my stomach and I have recently bought a latteral thigh trainer to tone my thighs but ive heard these are very good for losing weight. They are very low impact which is why I got one. Ive only had it a few days but ive used it quite a bit and it has been fine doesnt cause any pain to my hips etc.

You would probably be best talking to a physio about what would be best.

Good Luck

X
