What is the cause and treatment for Hidradenitis Suppurativa?

According to eMedicine, the cause is due to blockage of certain sweat glands called "apocrine glands". These glands can be found in at the underarm, near the nipple (areola), and around the groin.

When the glands become blocked, the secretions build up under the skin, basically causing an abscess. Sometimes, bacteria will colonize the area, causing an infection.

Currently, the treatment involves surgery or lasers to drain the abscess and/or remove the affected apocrine gland. Accutane (also known as Isotretinoin) may help prevent future recurrences by decreasing gland size and sebum production. Also, antibiotics may be used if there is an infection.

Here are some ways to prevent future outbreaks:
* Minimize heat exposure and sweating.
* Lose weight if overweight.
* Avoid constrictive clothing and frictional trauma.
* Avoid underarm antiperspirants and deodorants (this has not been proven to make a difference).

Also, the eMedicine article suggests that cigarette smoking may trigger an attack.
