Cold sores / fever blisters / Herpes simplex 1?

Why does the Herpes simplex 1 break out on your lips as commonly known as "Cold sores" or fever blisters?

Why not else where?

Why is herpes 2 only in the genital area and not else where?

Are they really the same virus?

Thank you both.
But I wanted to know what causes the two to affect the two different parts of the body.

And not cross that imaginary line at the belly button.

Hi,

Herpes Simplex 1 is "normally" evident as cold sores around the mouth.

Herpes Simplex 2 is "normally" evident as blisters in the genital region.

They tend to "stay" in these regions because the virus builds up and then stays in those areas.

HOWEVER, there is NO imaginary boundry.

You CAN get Herpes Simplex 1 in the genital area if your partner has a cold sore and has oral sex with you.

You CAN get Herpes Simplex 2 in the mouth area if your partner has genital herpes and you give them oral sex.

The thing is that a lot of people wouldn't willing have oral sex with someone who has open blisters so it isn't as often transferred between locations.

Just as other virus like the flu affect different parts of your body, Herpes is the same. The virus builds up in an environment that is most hospitable.

And YES they are the same virus but each one has its own mutations. Chicken Pox is actually another Herpes Virus but again is a completely different mutation.

So, that's Herpes for you.
