What is Herpes Simplex Type 1, IgG Antibody?

What is Herpes Simplex Type 1, IgG Antibody?

Herpes simplex Type 1 is the virus that causes cold sores around your mouth. (Type 2 is the genital herpes.) IgG antibodies are the antibodies that your body produces to fight an acute infection. (IgM antibodies are evidence of a remote infection.)
So Herpes Simplex Type 1, IgG Antibody is a blood test designed to measure the presence of antibodies that, if positive, would indicate one had been recently infected by the Herpes Simplex, Type 1 virus.

not sure, why dont you google it?

coldsore, i believe it's a virus.

Greetings,

I point out that Jim's answer above is largely correct, but he has his IgM and IgG's mixed up. IgM antibodies appear earliest in infections and are generally short-lived. Therefore, they are evidence of acute infection.

IgG antibodies appear after infection and are long-lived, usually decades. Therefore, the presence of IgG antibodies to HSV type 1 means that you've been exposed to the virus, which causes cold sores. This exposure may have occured a month ago, or decades ago.

You are not alone. The prevalence of IgG antibodies to HSV 1 increases with age. By middle age more than 90% of the population have them.
