Do you think heroin should be legal?

In the 50's heroin was legal and there were no more than 500 addicts at a time. There is a demand for heroin so why should this problem drain society? If it was controlled by the government then it would cause less deaths, reduce crime, and put drug dealers out of business!! what are your thoughts on this I am studying Social Care and doing a project on 'Should heroin be legal?'

Ihear what some of you are saying and that it kills people hang on a minute do you know how many people are killed through alcohol each year and the government make money from that and it is legal?
there are arguements for it being legal and arguements for it not being legal and with this question there always will be a debatable answer!!

When you consider the millions of dollars spent on the war on drugs it is obvious the people involved in this war have no intention of winning. If they did their gravy train would end. They would no longer receive a free ride with all expenses paid by the government. The only way to win this war is to control the demand, but they refuse to tackle the causes and only look to make the news by busting some shipments and arresting a few mules.

Hey, there are many arguments for and against.
FOR:
There are always temptations surrounding 'illegal' things, if it seems fine to do, then the appeal will die down.
Drug dealers would have less business
Less people could become addicted because it would be harder to find.
There would be less crime to pay for heroin

AGAINST:
The effects are still bad.

No. Heroin ruins lives and kills people. Something like that should be illegal.

Yes. If it were, I wouldn't take it and neither would you. There would be no new users, but suddenly the dealers would have no business and the police workload would be halved. Oh, and Osama and the Taliban would have their funds cut right down too (Afghanistan is where most of it comes from)

A couple of years ago when I was working on a hospital ward as a Staff Nurse we had a patient who was a heroin addict and he was 'tripping'. He was in a bay of six beds and it was visiting hours, so the room was full of patient's and their friends and families. This patient, he was aged about 24, went to the corner of the room and stripped off, he squated down and started to defecate and masturbate at the same time.

Supposing heroin was made legal, it would not decrease deaths or put drug dealers out of business. Crime would only decrease by the amount caused by heroin trade. The fact that it would be legal would increase consumption and lead to more vendors distributing it. More consumption leads to a greater potential for problems caused by addiction and overdose.

The potential for overdoes is extremely high. In the 60's heroin was an exceedingly popular drug, and (speaking from my father's experience) everyone personally knew someone who had died from overdose before graduating high school. Now, heroin is becoming more popular because the prices are going down. As a cause, I, myself, knew someone who overdosed before I had graduated high school.

Well, yes and no.
Legalising drugs like heroin and cocaine could possibly make it easier to control. It would help to take the sales out of the dealers hands, and the police and the government would be able to easily track heroin usage.
However, today's rising pressures and advertising through films could drive more and more people to heroin as an escape or as a fun thing to try, leading to addiction. Heroin is often taken with other drugs (commonly called 'Speedballs'), which can increase the risk of overdose, so may not reduce deaths.
There are advantages and disadvantages to both. Although my solution would be to educate people on the actual effects. Lots of heroin takers start because they are told false information about the way they will feel, and don't realise that the feeling wears off with increased tolerance.

I don't believe this is a valid premise. Decreasing the status of cannabis has if anything increased its use. But then I would make cigarettes illegal too. There acceptability to society certainly hasn't decreased the vast profits made from them be the manufacturers the wholesalers, the retailers, and the government!
