Does a heroin addict ever stop wanting heroin?

My job means that I've been around heroin addicts for 4 years and have never known someone to permanently stop taking it. Methadone doesn't seem to work and I heard that even when people do stop taking it they want it for years afterwards, is that true?

methadone is simply a replacement drug which is ideally meant to be reduced over time but as you know It doesnt work.
Many treatments out there dont work because although you can clean an addict up you may never find the solution to keeping them clean. while using they are physically and emotionally dependant on the drug but once clean they are still emotionally dependant and there are few follow up treatments to treat the need /want for the drug. Some users get off the drug but then replace the addiction with another so they are never "NOT" an addictive person. I think it would take a completely new and radical programme of intense therapy over years to fully "cure" an addict.

methadone is a substitute for heroin but be carefull iv been on meth for 5 year now snd before that i took heroin for 8-9 year i have relapsed a few times you just have to keep your head up and if you are seekng advice ask for somthing to blok the heroin not substitute it like i did Report It

An old saying goes:

"Once a smack head, always a smack head".

only when they're dead....

I know somebody that stopped 5 years ago and has no desire to take it now. I think they have to want to stop and recognise that it is ruining their lives before they stop wanting it!

It depends on the treatment they receive and the friends
that surround him after he is considered clear.

The physical addiction can be overcome, but the psychological addiction will still be there.
basically, the feeling that the users get from heroin is so good that they will always feel an emotional urge to get that feeling back, especially when things are not going well, or getting them down.

yes this is true. a herion addict will never stop wanting herion. this will be something that they will have to fight for life. but the addiction of the drug is easier than the fight against it so you will find that no matter how hard they try they will always go back to it because it is easier for them.

Like any drug the need to keep taking it never really goes away. The cravings do become more tolerable. If you ask an ex smoker 10 years after they have quit if they want a cig, they will probably say yes. It is self control that stops them.

i should imagine that they do.i met a lady once who had given up smoking 4 years and still loved the smell of a tab first being lit.the addiction stays with u
