Heroin use?

I just wanted to start off with the fact that I've never tried Heroin and I most probably never will, I'm just curious.

My question is; what happens once you use it (inject I think?)? I mean, do you hallucinate, or sleep, or what? I understand it might depend on its quality, but I still want to know. I know I can probably Google this, but I wanted some firsthand info. Also, why do people use it? What's its appeal? I know its physically and chemically addictive, but what else makes it so addicting?

Any personal stories are also greatly appreciated, 10 points will be credited to the best answer.

Thanks and have a great day!

If I'm not in the correct section can you please let me know?

Hopefully I can answer all of your questions here.
When heroin (or any opiate) is injected, it's instantaneous cloud nine. You body feels so light, all pain goes away, all problems go away. There is a light tingling on all areas of the skin and it's complete euphoria. That's the appeal. The high is what makes one do the drug again and again - it just feels that good. There are no hallucinations (unless the dope has another drug mixed in). It's very calming and one eases their way into complete relaxation - sometimes to the point of falling asleep (nodding off). After using an opiate about 4 times (in a row), one gets physically addicted. This means that one would be extremely sick without the drug (dopesick). When dopesick, the person vomits, has diarrhea, muscle cramping, runny nose, sneezing, migraines, body twitches. At least for me, nothing in this world set priority over finding my next fix when I was dopesick - no job, no family, no morals, nothing. The only option was to find a way to get more in order to alleviate the withdrawal (detox) symptoms. This is physical addiction versus psychological addiction. Although psychologically, I "wanted" the drug, physically, however, my body "needed" the drug, otherwise, I contemplated suicide because the pain gets just that bad. Injecting the drug is an addiction in itself. Personally, I became addicted to the ritual of injecting heroin. The needle, the act of cooking it, the spoons, cotton, arm ties, all of it - became quite an obsession which is extremely overpowering. Injecting a drug means instant results. When someone is dopesick, they cannot get high fast enough. I began my heroin use by snorting the drug but once I injected it for the first time, I never snorted it (or cocaine) ever again. I feel in love with injecting it and did so for the next 5 years.
Medically speaking, I do know that opiates affect some receptors in the brain (seratonin, maybe?) and makes it so those receptors do not work on their own. They need the opiate in order to function. I've heard this is why so many of us addicts suffer from severe depression once we stop the drug - because it takes time for our brains to get those receptors to work properly now that the drug is gone. I've been clean 5 months now and still am not anywhere near being right again, so in my opinion, I'm living breathing proof that addiction is a scientific disease.
I sure hope this helps. Any other questions about, I certainly have enough years of drug use (17 years to be exact) and experience that I'm more than happy to share with you, so feel free to email me if you'd like.
Thanks DEA for having me look at this question a little deeper & asking me to answer it....I want to help anyone I can....

First of all why do you question this? Heroin is bad news no matter what. Your curiosity scares me, cos the only way to really know is to try...but the answwer to that is don't bother cos it will waste your life. Do yourself a favour and find another way to be curious..Heroin is dangerous and deadly despite any false info you may be gettting. Nothing wrong with being interested in drugs but for gods sake don't get get involved with that bulshit... smartenup!!!!

You are in the right section--and if anyone can accurately answer your question, they will go down in history forever, --that is the secret of all secrets.
Knowing what is going on, and still doing it is the addiction, combined with the love affair of the needle, and the fascination of where to put it, and the dope sick--, and the puking, and the nod -out , and the
almost dying, and the--and the----
Smack puts you where you want to be and takes you where you don,t want to go--these 2 things--tear @ you --until the fix, and the roller coaster starts again
this will not cover what you want to know--I have asked another 1 of my friends to answer this 1 I,m not as qualified as others.
My experience is minimal--I just cleaned up the mess

The post above pretty much says it all, but I wanted to add 2 points:

Heroin (Opiates) is the highest cause of drug related deaths - in the UK between 68 and 71% of drug related deaths are a result of Opiates either on their own or in combination with other drugs.

Secondly, people often wonder why drug users try heroin when not many people like needles. Many people actually start by smoking the Heroin, often mixed in with Marijuana / Cannabis and the addiction picks up pace from there until they start using intravenously.

Based on the statistics I would advise you to steer clear of this. Heroin wrecks lives.

If you feel this is a potential problem, in the UK, I would advise you to call Talk To Frank, the Government funded drugs / alcohol helpline on 0800 77 66 00 or http://www.talktofrank.com

In the USA, I would suggest you call Addiction Search toll free on 1-800-559-9503 or http://www.addictionsearch.com for someone to steer you in the right direction.

Good luck with it all.

give the ten points to krista, she knocked it out of the park!!!

however, let me offer a personal story,........

my brother joe had been a long time addict-he helped me get off the stuff and avoid a lenthy prison sentence. The longest he ever stayed clean was about 11 months, and everytime he started using again-he would say he intended to stay off the skag (heroin).
well, after he served several prison sentences, he became homeless, and after his last sentence, the night before his release --he called home, reciting the same basic stuff he did every time he was coming out "this time i'm gonna do it right-go to church-get a job-go to n.a. meetings-see my p.o."
and one more time---in spite of his honest good intentions, his desire to be free of the damn drug,......he used! he was found in the bus station in Los Angeles with the spike still in his arm---dead!!!!

the allure of the drug, the insanity is that it strips you of everything, including the ability to battle it's siren call.
you give up everything you want for it, all the best intentions in the world won't be an adequate defense!
