I have a herniated disk in my lower back.?

My doctor is recommending that I get an epidural cortizone shot. I'm not so sure this is the best for me. I have severe lower back pain constantly and it is effecting my personal life. I'm not able to find information on this procedure for a herniated disk. Does anybody have any comments?

I too had a ruptured disk in the lower back (L1-S5). I was offered shots but the neurologist indicated the pain would most likely return and suggested a micro-disectomy.

He went in and removed only the portion of the disk that was causing the problems. The rest of the disk is still in place. No fusion is needed in the lower back because the muscles provided support to the back structure.

As soon as I woke up from surgery, I could feel that the pressure on the nerve had been relieved.

My recommendation - go for a microdisectomy - get it fixed permanently the first time.

I had it done twice. It didn't work, but my mom had it done a bunch of times and it helped for a few months each time. I was scared to death because it sounds awful, but they should give you something to relax before the shot. It is a rather safe procedure. Anyway, it's mostly in the head. If the shot itself doesn't work, the drug for relaxing will take care of the pain for at least a half hour.

Good luck.
