Surgery for herniated disk?

my mom went into surgery today for a herniated disk. the doctor told her that they dont usually put you to sleep, but since my mom is extremely sensitive to pain, they put her to sleep.
are the doctors normally supposed to put a tube down your throat? why? and if not, then what are some reason they would need to?

You have some serious concerns. Why don't you ask one of the Doctors or Nurses. Your mom will probably ned a little help for a while... cleaning, dishes, cooking. Do some things that will truly suprise her. She'll like that way more than a card!

Yeah, when she was sleeping they had to stick a tube in. Yucky but OK. They just do it routinely.

The tube is an endotracheal tube, used to deliver anasthesia and oxygen to the patient and is required for many kinds of general surgery. This type of surgery requires the muscles to be relaxed. However, some surgeons are using epidural sedation for herniated disks which doesn't require this tube.

I'm 28 i had 2 back surgeries. The tube in your throat maybe for breathing, but down the throat maybe to drain your lungs during anesthesia. What i heard and experianced doctors normally put you to sleep, unless it's not invasive. Some dr's put you to sleep during epidural injections, some don't.So every dr uses different approach.I have been to many different doctors and they all do things differently. If you have any questions about anything you can email me.Good luck to your mom,i know it sucks.Hope all is well
