Cervical (neck) herniated disk?

i think that my mom has Cervical (neck) herniated disk..and she goes to this massaging place where they massage her neck arms shoulders and hands. Then, her arms, neck, and shoulders wont ache fro a period of time and her fingers arent numb or tingly. does anyone know if she can just go to this massage place to treat cervical (neck) disk herniation or does she need to go to some professional place because the massaging place seems to be working.. thanks guys :)

While the massage does feel good, if a disc herniation is the cause of her symptoms, massage will only cover it up temporarily. Many times we have actually found that it is not the massage that relieves the symptoms, but the positioning of the patient in a position that allows the protrustion to shift.

If the disc is the problem, it requires specific techniques...movements or manual techniques to restore the joint to it's normal position. I would recommend she see a physical therapist who is trained in mechanical diagnosis and therapy (go to http://www.mckenziemdt.org )...however, if the MT is bringing her temporary relief, there is no reason she cannot see both the MT and the PT at the same time...the PT will show her how to actually correct the problem.

Yes. I have had my cervical spine operated on and they placed a piece of metal in there to fuse two levels together. However, this is the last resort. She can go to a Physical Therapist to get this type of therapy done by someone who has went to school for several years. I am going to a Physical Therapist right now for my lower back and she told me the other day she has went to college for seven years to learn what she does.

Massage therapy is an excellent method for relaxing the tight muscles that are very tight to protect the herniated disc, but it will not correct the problem. The disc itself must be corrected, and to do so, I usually refer to a special type of chiropractor in town who does an excellent job of correcting disc herniations.
