Does surgery relieve a herniated disk?

My husband has a herniated disk in his lower back. He's had a series of pain management injections with only temporary relief. Now he's doing physical therapy 3 days a week. Per the doc, if this doesn't work, the next step is surgery but he tells us that the surgery may not give complete relief. Anyone gone through with the surgery? If so, did if relieve your back/leg/hip pain?

The reason why many surgeries fail is that patients are not always properly screened to see if their diagnosis (herniated disc) is consistent with how their symptoms respond to mechanical movement.

Many people whose pain stems from a disc herniation will respond to physical therapy...especially the MDT method. For those screened with the MDT method who are found to have an "irreducible derrangement" often do very well with surgery (meaning they feel a good amount of relief), however, they are often still prone to recurrent episodes of back pain. In general, these people feel better after surgery, but not always 100%. Conversely, those who did not fall under that diagnostic category, but still underwent surgery often failed miserably.

If you are interested in him seeing a PT with MDT certification, I recommend you go to: http://www.mckenziemdt.org

I have problems with my back also and my surgeon said he would not operate on my back unless i got down and couldnt get up because said it could make it worse when it comes to your lower back,
