Herniated disk - any alternatives to surgery?

I have a large herniation in my L-6, L-7 disk with pain down my left leg. I've been in PT for a little over 2 months with some relief, particularly with daily walks, but the pain gets worse when I do the strengthening exercises prescribed. I lead an active life. Is there anything I can try to avoid surgery & improve my condition? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I think it may actually be L4, L-5, not sure, it's the lowest lumbar disk.

I am not a doctor however, i am a patient. I have had herniated disc problems for over 15 years off and on. the very best alternative would be to keep going to pt. with the proper exercises and treatment. what you have going on is that your disc is hitting your sciatic nerve which is causing the pain down your leg.also if your in extreme pain i would suggest going to your Nero surgeon and ask him about epidurals. this will give you instant relief. no surgery. just injections which is basically a little poke. good luck.

Do not lift or carry heavy loads(more than 2 kilograms or 5 pounds).Sleep or lie on the ground or a rather hard mattress. Lie full on the back with legs a little flexed at least for a few minutes each day.Walking and swimming may do you good.Control your emotional stress. Also visit:

  • New surgery for the herniated disk?

No. To my knowledge they are not keen to do surgery for herniated discs, as the Patient tends to end up in more pain after the surgery. Best of Luck
