I went straight for the surgery, Felt better when I woke up in Recovery and was out and about within about 3 wks. I was still causious for a few months but all in all, NO COMPLAINTS. I heard 100's of horror stories about back surgery before hand and am so glad I didn't fall for what I consider to be forklore. The operations now are not only quick, but extremely effective.
Good luck, I hope you get relief from your disc pain soon!!

Go to a Pain Management Clinic and have a spinal Corisone infusion done. They work and you can have three per year. Now I am swimming, bike riding, and walking, and enjoying life again. Please get your Dr's ok before doing any physical activity. Best Wishes!

I got Epidural Injections and that helped a lot. Anti-inflamatories help keep the swelling around the disc and nerves down (Motrin, aspirin). Physical therapy also helps to strengthen back muscles to avoid future injury. I have heard good reviews for Acupuncture for the pain. I know 2 people they have had back surgery. One got so-so results, one wishes it had never been done.

Discs herniate in various degrees, 1 - mild, 2- moderate, and 3 - severe. Follow the advice of the doctor that diagnosed your condition. I have 9 prolapsed discs, and have had a C5-C6 discectomy and fusion. I work out 3X a week. Exercise helps keep the spine strong and prevent injury, but your doctor is the one best to determine the course of action. Only a rating of 3 - severe, would allow for surgery. Chiropractors will know better than to adjust the vertebrae in that area. Massage therapists may not know better.
