How to get rid of herniated disk pain.?

None of the meds my doc gave me are working. My neck is killing me. What can I do?

I had a severe herniated disk (6mm) in my back at L5 S1 that was so debilitating I was in constant agony and could barely walk or stand. I felt like I was 80 years old but I'm in my 30's. The epidural injections helped quite a bit but the pain was still there. For pain meds, only Celebrex worked for me. I thought for sure I was going to need surgery, but then I went to a physical therapist who showed me how to stretch & exercise the muscles around the herniated disk.

I started walking 6 miles a day on the sand at the beach and the more I exercised, the less it hurt. I exercised for hours every day like crazy and after 3 weeks the pain was GONE. If I missed a day of exercise, the pain came back so that was enough motivation to keep exercising.

Also, I prayed about it. I couldn't stand in one place for more than a few seconds, and I was getting married in a few weeks where I'd be expected to stand for 30 minutes in one spot, which was the most painful thing to do with the herniated disk. I was healed 3 weeks before my wedding, no surgery needed. Just exercise and prayer.

The best thing u can do for a herniated disc is RICE. Rest, ice, compression and elevation. Elevate ur feet by putting two or three pillows under them until all the pressure is off ur back. Simultaneiously icing ur back, twenty minutes on, twenty minutes off. Rest as much as u can until its better. Good luck. Hopefully u wont needs meds. but vicodin worked for me when i had my back probs. But try to stay away from them cuz theyre addicting.

The next course of treatment is injections.

Try a home neck traction device. These things really help take pressure off of the disc. The only other thing that might help is prednsolone - Medrol Dose Pack if your doc has not given this to you have him prescribe it ASAP.

I had the same problem about 3 yrs ago, nothing the Dr. gave me helped either,I screamed and cried in pain all the time,I could'nt go anywhere.I had to stay in bed and suffer it out for 3 months, then a little ,day by day it started to get better. My neck still hurts, and I take meds for some relief.I feel for you, hope yours isn't as bad as mine.I am not able to work anymore because of it.I am just glad that its not as bad as it was the first 3 months

My husband has a herniated/buldging disc and the docs kept trying to give him pain killers that he couldn't take. (made him sick...didn't like the way they made him feel). They also tried to tell him to just rest which is impossible for him to do all the time since we have an 11 month old and he is our only source of income. So he has to work full time. They finally decided to send him to physical therapy. So now he is taking celebrex....yeah there is a lot of bad talk about it but it's only short term.....taking pain killers at night to sleep and physical therapy twice a week. There hasn't been a huge difference just yet, but it is definately helping. Good luck to you, I know it's very painful.

I go to pain management for my neck....I've had nine injections, and am on pain medicine....percocet and avinza....the avinza is a blend of morphine and pain medication....exercise helps some....but not as much as I'd like.....It's either all this or surgery....and twice I was told that my Doctors were dropping my insurance....I think it's karma...something is saying that I shouldn't have this surgery. So now I'm to afraid to have the surgery and I'm refusing to have it !!!!!!!!!! I just stick with what I'm doing and hope for the best !!!!! Everyone has to deal with something, I guess this is just my cross to bare !!!!!!!! I can sympathise with you, I know exactly what your going through....why not try the pain management....the injections do help some, once I had one and it lasted for over a year !!!!!!!!!!! Good luck to you, and I hope that you find something that works for you !!!!!!!!!

If you really have a herniated disk there are only two things that you can do. You can either wait it out and hope it dries up or you can have surgery. If you have a disk bulge that's another story, there are things you can do to help. Did you have an MRI to confirm that you had a herniated disk? If you are not sure if you just have a bulge or a herniation, you should go to a McKenzie specialist, you can look for one on the Internet. Hope this helps and if you have any questions for me you can just message me.
