Hiatus Hernia Young women with strange symptoms...?

I have just been diagnosed with a sliding hiatus hernia in my Esophagus.

I am 31 have a healthy life style , don't drink and exercised regulaly untill recently.

Over the last 12 week i have been admitted into hospital twice for 8 days, with IV drips and morphine for pain, they thought it was my Kidneys as i had horrendous back/ side pain , vomiting for 8 hrs plus and very ill..

I had a endoscospy which diagnosed a hiatus hernia , and had stomach biospy's ( not sure why) totally shocked by the results, also had a balium meal today.

i have been of work since as i feel tired all the time and i am on a PPI ( Lansoprazole 30mg and Motilium ).

Will i always feel ill ? Can i exercise ?

I'm just confussed as my symptoms are nothing like i have read about a hiatus hernia.

I am sleeping with my pillows higher, and it has helped with pain, i don't burp or get heartburn just tired and swelling stomach and generally not well, i have good and bad day's .

I have had exactly the same as you for years though I'm still waiting for and endoscopy after 5 years of being diagnosed with the hernia.. yes 5 years.

My stomach swells my bra feels too tight and I feel mortally tired most of the time and cannot bend over of wear tight clothes.

As you are still only very young I would be inclined to ask your consultant if it is possible for you to have keyhole surgery to correct your condition.

You can exercise but you will have to find your own limitations. I cannot garden like I used to in fact it was gardening that caused mine when I foolishly tryied to pick up a very heavy rock to put round my fish pond. Straight away the acid and the awful pains began and they have never stopped despite the medications.

I found that not many of my symptoms concur with what I have read about on the internet, However I understand that this complaint is starting to be given more creedence and more research into how the sphincter muscle can be strengthened is gathering momentum.

It has been discovered that a hiatus hernia can cause heart problems and respiratory probelms which I have. Some days I find it hard to catch my breath and I have a suffer with a chronic cough. This is because the acid runs into the lungs and that is why it is more important to raise your bed at the head end by approx 1" rather than prop your head up with too many pillows as this can cause the acid to sit in the abdomen.

I feel for you being so young to have one of this least understood conditions ...not pleasant. Lets hope they find a prevention for this condition very soon.
